OMD provides paramedics to medically stabilize you and save your life if you are injured or have a medical emergency. OMD provides fully equipped ambulances to transport you to a hospital. OMD’s emergency medical response service has fixed overhead costs to maintain fully equipped ambulances, essential medicines, and life-saving supplies. This requires UP-FRONT subscriptions to stay in business.
Background
In April 2022, Pete’s Camp residents voted for OMD Ambulancias Emergency Medical Response service for Pete’s Camp. With a 2-year contract, the annual fee was included in the Homeowner leases. Since then, OMD has responded to emergencies, triaged injuries, stabilized medical conditions, transported victims, improved health, coordinated with doctors and hospitals, joined as volunteer firefighters, and provided us assurance and peace of mind that we are secure during a medical emergency. OMD has provided residents with assistance for non-emergency medical needs, referred residents to doctors, and provided follow-up check-ins.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
The price is 7200 pesos per lot for 2025. The per-lot membership covers the primary residents of the lot for emergency medical response and treatment and transport to medical care in town, in Mexicali, or Calexico/El Centro. The membership covers primary lot residents; 50% discount off list prices for visiting family/guests. A full-time renter living as a resident in Pete’s Camp may sign up for membership.
Why must I pay in advance?
Emergency medical services must be funded in order to respond immediately. Mexico regulations DOF: 09/23/2014 – Official Gazette of the Federation dof.gob.mx. NORMA Oficial Mexicana NOM-034-SSA3-2013, Regulación de los servicios de salud. Atención médica prehospitalaria require pre-hospital medical care responders to be trained and licensed, and maintain inspected and serviced ambulances which are fully equipped with required medicines and supplies. OMD must plan and budget accordingly to ensure readiness, competence, and compliance.
With 115 sign-ups in Pete’s Camp we enable OMD to remain in business by paying for fixed overhead costs, specifically enough for the entire year, ensuring medicines and supplies are ready, staffing ONE EMT/paramedic onsite (a second EMT/paramedic on standby), and funding basic requirements. This amount just keeps “the lights on”, not covering any other business expenses (such as battery or tires!)
Update November 12, 2024 – WE HAVE OVER 115 Pete’s Camp sign-ups! You may still sign up for the 7200 pesos deal. OMD will also now accept a limited number of residents at other campos to pay for memberships (at a higher price).

Additional Information
1) Renters who are short-term occupants (free or paid) of lots/casas are not eligible for membership benefits and are not covered for free emergency medical service
This includes people renting lots/casas short-term from leaseholder, or people staying at lots/casas that are managed by third party rental services such as My San Felipe Vacations, AirB&B, and any other short-term rental services. OMD can respond to their emergency, invoice for services, and require up-front payment for transfers.
2) Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic role in Mexico
EMTs are trained and licensed, and have the same responsibilities as their counterparts in the United States. EMTs with additional training are classified as “advanced” and are the same as paramedics in the United States. The OMD team members are licensed EMTs/advanced EMTs. These professionals are first responders — trained health professionals who go to a scene where people need immediate help. They make vital decisions quickly and in high-stress situations. They work under the supervision of a doctor, though the doctor is usually not on site. They communicate with a doctor via phone, radio, or pre-written orders.
They respond immediately and save lives, treating people with breathing issues, cardiac symptoms, stroke symptoms, severe allergic reactions, diabetes crises, medication or drug overdoses, dehydration, syncope, choking, etc., and physical traumas from accidents such as falls, broken bones, lacerations, punctures, burns, fights, dog bites, vehicle/UTV crashes/rollovers, swimming pools, etc. They take charge at the scene of an emergency and perform life-saving procedures prior to and while transporting patients to the hospital.
They communicate with doctors and hospital staff, while caring for you, and as you are transferred by ambulance.
3) OMD differs from San Felipe’s 911 service for medical emergencies
With OMDs private emergency medical service, you call them at (686) 117-1540 or (686) 158-7498 or What’sApp - OMDambulancias San Felipe. If you are a member, you can call them and they will respond to your emergency wherever you are in San Felipe.
Without OMD, someone calls the San Felipe 911 service. The call will be routed to a Spanish-speaking dispatcher. The dispatcher forwards the call to the Police representative or Fire representative (who is also responsible for medical emergencies). The Fire representative radios the San Felipe Fire Department, which in turn determines if their only fire station ambulance is available to respond to the emergency (usually this ambulance is reserved for fire emergencies). Otherwise, the Fire Representative contacts Cruz Roja to request they respond. The 911 dispatcher provides the victim location; this is often a challenge. The one San Felipe Fire Station ambulance is equipped as a basic ambulance, usually with an EMT. The Cruz Roja ambulance is also a basic ambulance but does not have medically trained personnel. IMMS, Centro de Salud, Army/Navy do not respond to 911 calls and do not have ambulances available to respond to individual medical emergencies.
4) Chantli clinic on Highway 5
OMD works with the Chantli doctors! Chantli Casa de Asistencia y Geriatría, located at KM 181, provides general medical care, specialty consultation, internal medicine, and geriatrics. They are open to the general public Monday – Friday 8 am to 5 pm. I have been told they are able to address urgent care needs during office hours. The doctors are not on call for emergencies; however, they work with OMD to provide them operational supervision. Dr. Jose Manuel Lopez, Dra. Laura Lopez, and Dr. Ruben Rivera are on staff. They also provide onsite assisted living spaces.
5) Required process following a death
With OMDs private emergency medical service, they contact administración pública immediately and provide initial assistance with the authorities.
By law, a deceased person may not be removed from the premises/location of death until the authorities are notified, arrive, and investigate. In the event a death is found to be consistent with disease or natural causes, the administración pública issues the family member a document allowing family member to contact a funeraria. Recommended funerarias are private (fee-based). The contacted funeraria is the agency with a certified Medical Examiner (MD) to issue a death certificate, and to transfer the decedent for subsequent cremation/burial.
If your family member passes, OMD contacts administración pública and stays with you. When the authorities arrive, OMD provides them the details, and signs the investigative report. As a courtesy OMD may assist you by translating between you and the authorities, and help you arrange with the funeraria.
